Teaching Philosophy
I have been teaching privately for 10+ years leading students to top state honors, all-state choirs, musical roles, college auditions, scholarships, and outstanding solo opportunities!
I strive to bring out the best in my students by teaching a core technique applicable to classical, musical theatre, and pop genres. While the core remains predominantly the same amongst each, I engage students to learn and discern the subjective differentiations of each genre to unlock the uniqueness of their sound. Every student’s journey is different, and I work to tailor each lesson to the student’s individual development within that journey. I base my teaching on three concepts: awareness, balance, and openness. These three concepts help students achieve their goals in a timely manner and reach the next level in their performance and studies.
Through awareness, I seek to rectify the habits that hinder students from singing in a totally free manner. A completely relaxed, confident core of sound is what all of the best performers need and possess. By awareness students can grow to a spot of self-correction regarding the habits that are not serving them properly and replace them with the better technique.
Through balance, students learn how to prepare and perform efficiently while maintaining the demands of everyday life and study. Without instruction regarding balance, students may not achieve the mindset of discipline that comes with a balanced personal and professional life.
Through openness, students learn trust. Not only trust in themselves and their instrument but within their artistic interpretations. As educators we are perpetually encouraging our students to interpret music and situations from different perspectives. A lack of openness obstructs developing artists from taking the next steps in their growth.
With these values I strive to instill a healthy, sustainable vocal technique within all of my singers. No matter their skill level, I challenge them to heighten their performances and subsequently the experiences of the audiences for whom they perform. The performance is a result dependent upon the variables presented in its journey, and I take pride in creating great performances and great journeys.
I teach musical independence and initiative in addition to theory, technique and repertoire.

- Theory - studying the “grammar” of the language of music. I focus on solfege (“do, re, mi…”) to help students with sight-singing and pitch issues,
- Technique - the physical mechanics of the voice as an evolving, growing instrument,
- Repertoire - a list of pieces to be learned based on standard classical, jazz and popular music essential to gaining an understanding and appreciation for music of many different kinds
